  • A complete performance - After opting to bowl first, India did well to pick up 3 wickets in the Powerplay, stemming the flow of the Windies batting lineup. On the other hand, Shai Hope continued his fine form with a well-compiled half-century. Debutant Naman Dhir was prolific for India, picking up three wickets, and overall, the spinners were yet again at their best. Sherfane Rutherford's counter-punch did keep West Indies in the hunt for 190, but late wickets pegged them down to 171. In reply, India did stutter early, but captain Shreyas Iyer and India's most consistent T20I batter in 2026, Ishan Kishan, roared back to seal an eight-wicket win in fine fashion. We now move to Ranchi for the 2nd T20I on Friday, October 9. That game will begin at 1.30 pm GMT (7 pm IST), but you can join us a lot sooner for the build-up. Cheers!

  • Player of the Match - The Indian skipper, Shreyas Iyer, has been given the accolade for his sensational and unbeaten knock of 102 off 43 balls. Asked about his past success in Lucknow, Iyer jokes that after the exhausting travel, he did not even realise where he was. He adds, with a smile, that he would like to wake up feeling like this every day. Shreyas says they adapted quickly to the wicket and conditions, while bowling first also helped them considerably. He stresses that they did not want to use the travel or other factors as an excuse and instead approached the game like any other cricketer would. Iyer says the excitement around the India-West Indies ODI series showed just how entertaining the contest can be, and it was important for India to carry the same energy into the T20I series while sticking to their process. Reflecting on his maiden T20I century, Iyer says he had been thinking about getting his first hundred for a while and is delighted that the dream has finally come true. Mentions that winning after contributing to the team's success makes the moment even more special. If it is your day, he says, the priority should always be to win the game for the team. On Naman Dhir's contribution with the ball, Iyer says Dhir wanted to bowl in the crucial moments, capitalised on the turn and impressed him with his attitude. After a long day, Iyer jokes that he is already sleepy, adding that Axar Patel's eyes had also started to turn red.

  • The skipper of West Indies - Shai Hope says that you can look back on many different things when you lose, but on surfaces in India, especially with the dew coming on, you need to put on a few more runs on the board to give yourself a bit of cushion. On the lineup, Hope says that they felt it was the best one for this game and it was all about everyone performing their roles. Also reckons that playing only two spinners wasn't the best choice and would have liked an extra spinner, but feels that one more wicket in the Powerplay could have changed things. Ends by admitting that he loves batting in these conditions.

  • The Presentation ceremony...

  • A quick word with Ishan Kishan - On his role in the partnership, Kishan says Shreyas Iyer was in very good touch, so the priority was to keep him on strike and keep the momentum going. He says you can tell in the middle if one batter is seeing the ball particularly well, and he admits he was not in the best of touch himself tonight.  On his catch, Ishan shares that he could not judge the ball properly under the lights, but had an intuition that it would come around waist height. Thankfully, that is how it turned out, and he was able to hold on to the catch. On the quick turnaround from the Asian Games, Ishan says there can be days when you are not feeling your best, but once you put on the jersey and step onto the field, you have to give your 100 per cent.

  • Iyer roars back to form - Shreyas Iyer has had a bit of a torrid time since becoming the captain of this Indian T20I squad, but in recent times, the wins have come, and yet his form has been down. That wasn't the case today, though, as from the start he looked in control. Ishan Kishan too started well, but soon enough, Iyer took complete control of the chase. Even through the middle overs, Iyer kept accelerating, and after the mid-innings hydration break, Iyer decided to surpass all limits. He reached 50 in 28 balls, but finished with 102 off 43, going from 50 to 101 in just 14 balls. Iyer and Kishan remained unbeaten, with their partnership standing tall at 137 off just 68 balls as India got over the finishing line with 32 balls to spare.

  • Windies strike early, but fail to capitalize - The Indian chase got off to a flying start as Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma racked up 15 runs in the first over. However, the spin duo of Akeal Hosein and Roston Chase hit right back, dismissing both the Indian openers. With the Powerplay nearly evened out, Shamar Joseph came in and conceded a plethora of boundaries in the 6th over, handing India the advantage in the chase.

  • A cakewalk in the end - India cruise past West Indies on the back of one of the very best knocks in T20I cricket in recent history from their skipper, Shreyas Iyer. Dominance of the highest order, truth be told, and India are 1-0 up in this five-match series, leaving West Indies with a lot of work to do.

    Over 14.4. 8 runs. Bowler: Roston Chase. : 172/2 (rr 11.73)

  • 14.4

India blitz their way home in 14.4 overs and go 1-0 up in the five-match series. Chase pushes it through at the sticks. Iyer taps it to the right of the bowler. Ishan is backing up a bit far, and Chase gets to the ball quickly. He turns around and fires in a throw at the bowling end but misses, conceding an overthrow as the ball rolls towards deep cover.

  • 14.3

SIX! There it is, a maiden T20I ton for Shreyas Iyer. What a way to return to form for the Indian skipper. Right from the outset, the way he struck the ball gave you the feeling that something special was brewing, and it only got better as the innings progressed, with Iyer going through the gears beautifully. Shreyas brings up his hundred in just 42 balls, the fastest by an Indian in a T20I against West Indies, inform the on-air commentators. This is fired across off by Chase from around the wicket. Iyer walks across the off stump and swings it high and handsome over long on for half a dozen. Shreyas takes off his helmet and turns towards the dugout, raising both hands aloft in celebration. A special moment for the Indian skipper.

  • 14.2

Floated up, on middle and leg. Kishan lunges and ease it to long on for a single. He brings Iyer back on strike, who is on 95 and India need 7 more runs for the win.

  • 14.1

Darted in at the pads. Kishan misses out on the glance and gets hit on the pads.

  • Carnage, absolute carnage by Shreyas Iyer. Roston Chase has been brought back.

  • End of Over 14
    Over 14. 24 runs. Bowler: Matthew Forde. : 164/2 (rr 11.71)

  • 13.6

SIX! Iyer is in a hurry here, and what a knock this is turning out to be. He's on 95. Back of a length and over middle, trying to angle it across. Shreyas Iyer leans across to the off side and clobbers it over wide long on for a biggie.

  • 13.5

FOUR! That's too easy. Bowled from around the wicket, a full toss on the pads, and Iyer flicks it away down to fine leg or a boundary.

  • 13.4

Pitched up around off, pushed down through mid off for a single.

  • 13.3

PUT DOWN! That is a simple catch spilled by Shamar Joseph. Length ball over off and middle, Shreyas Iyer looks to power it down the ground but hits it flat and straight to the fielder at long on. Joseph is late to get forward and ends up getting hit on the wrists, rather than pouching it safely into the hands.

  • 13.2

SIX! One more! Dug in shorter this time and straighter, too. It is a back-of-the-hand slower ball as well. Iyer picks it right out of the hand and swings it high over deep mid-wicket for another biggie.

  • 13.1

SIX! Straight as an arrow! Back of a length, it is the leg cutter. Iyer picks it early, moves to the off side and tonks it towards the sightscreen for a biggie.

  • Matthew Forde comes back on, replacing Roston Chase.

  • End of Over 13
    Over 13. 19 runs. Bowler: Akeal Hosein. : 140/2 (rr 10.77)

  • 12.6

FOUR! Powered away to the fence. Floated up on a length and around off. Ishan Kishan goes deep in the crease and moves to the off side, drilling it down with a straight bat and to the right of the bowler for a boundary. 19 big runs off that over.

  • 12.5

Fractionally shorter on the pads, worked away to deep square leg for one more.

  • 12.4

Flatter and darted well across off, Ishan Kishan rocks back and tries to muscle it over deep mid-wicket. Kishan gets rushed and mistimes it on the bounce to the fielder in the deep for a single. The 100-run stand is up between these two as well.

  • 12.4

A bit fuller and straighter, worked away through wide mid on for a single. Uh, oh! There's a late call for a front-foot No Ball, and that is a cardinal sin for a spinner. Free Hit loading...

  • 12.3

FOUR! Iyer has been prolific in that region this evening. Good length at the stumps, bowled flatter, and once again Iyer makes a bit of room and hits it hard and flat over the leaping extra cover fielder for a boundary.

  • 12.2

SIX! One of, if not the, shots of the day. Hosein drags the length back a bit, on off, looking to turn it away. Shreyas Iyer backs away and just slams it handsomely over deep cover for a biggie.

  • 12.1

On a length and drifted across the off stump. Kishan stays back and slaps it down to long off for a single.

  • Akeal Hosein is back for his final over. 3-0-18-1 so far for Hosein.

  • End of Over 12
    Over 12. 7 runs. Bowler: Roston Chase. : 121/2 (rr 10.08)
    This Over: 1,1,1,1,1,2,
  • 11.6

Agricultural from Shreyas this time. Floated up on middle, slogged away between deep backward square leg and deep mid-wicket for a couple of runs. 7 runs off Chase's returning over. 51 needed now off 48 balls.

  • 11.5

Five singles in a row now. Nicely flighted, drifted into middle and leg. Kishan clips it in front of mid-wicket and turns the strike over.
